Build it off-site
2,553 sites, nine months early. AI just rediscovered it.
Twenty-odd years ago I ran the rollout of broadband to 2,553 NSW schools and TAFEs.
$74 million. ISDN and frame relay to MPLS. Every site different.
The plan everyone expected was the obvious one:
send a skilled engineer to each site, unbox the kit, configure it, test it, move on.
Two and a half thousand times.
We didn't do that.
We set up next to the office and staged every site's equipment off-site first.
Racked it, configured it, tested it, labelled it, boxed it as a known-good unit.
Then shipped it ready to go.
On site it was plug in, confirm, done.
No high-end engineer standing in a regional school waiting for a config to load.
No discovering the same problem 2,553 times.
We finished nine months early and 30 per cent under budget.
The lesson hasn't aged. The AI-factory world is rediscovering it right now and calling it modular, off-site build.
Same move: do the hard, skilled work in a controlled place, ship known-good, keep the expensive time off the critical path.
Thinking ahead in delivery isn't a nicety. It's months.
Written from inside the work. The take is mine; the agent gathers, I judge.
